Cafe hopping around the world

  • About Us
When I was told that this is only a "cafe", I would think it's a casual place that a typical cafe would be anywhere else in the world. Here in Moscow, cafes are so posh and pretty, not dressing up for it makes you look silly.

This posh cafe seems so magically pretty that every picture taken is a big wow. Feels like I'm in Beauty in the Beast, if you recall the library scene in the castle where Belle and the Beast hung out.

We were placed upstairs at the Library Hall. There are a few floors, and do check out the elevator in the building.. It's a very old one and it is still operating. The building itself is very old, so becareful of the uneven steps as the toilet is located at the basement and it is very dark down there.

Olivier Salad (₽1490 / USD25.50)

Oliver or Olivier salad, main ingredient is egg, potato and mayo. Lots of mixed vegetables in it too, topped with yellow and red caviar. I believe there's crawfish in it too since the tail was served together with the salad. It was so good I finished every bit of it! The only thing I hated was capers...

Borsch Soup (₽655 / USD11.20)

Russian beetroot soup with a spoon of sour cream. I hated beetroot but for some reason, Russian's beetroot tasted different from the usual ones I had. It is all sweet and very addictive - a little bit like Chinese's ABC soup but additional beetroot in it. It is really refreshing I could use another portion!

Grilled Sea-bass with Roasted Potatoes and Vegetables (₽1990 / USD34)

Unfortunately, I was already almost full by the time my main arrived. This will not be the main reason for my judgement on this dish. The main was nothing special at all - just grilled sea bass which Italian's salt crust version is way better. Fish is very fresh with a hint of lemon sourness (I squeezed more lemon to it), served with perfectly grilled potatoes and vegetable skewer. I finished the fish anyway; I felt absolutely guilty for not finishing the fresh fish.

Dessert Café Pushkin (₽985 / USD16.80)

The ever popular Café Pushkin Dessert... Cake made out of berrys, topped with a layer creamy mouse, covered with a layer of chocolate. A mixture of sour and sweet... perfect combination!

Likes: A wonderful surprise - this is not a cafe, it's a proper beautiful and posh restaurant! No complains on food & service
Dislikes: Probably consider increasing the brightness in the toilet - it's hazardous...

Every trip is quite incomplete without having a drink at a picturesque bar. For island vacays, it will be a sunset bar. I did a search online and ultimately, W has one of the prettiest bar in Koh Samui.

I have always visited W hotels in the city but never actually visit a resort of W's before. The entrance is quite far from the main road, which is about 10 minutes from Fisherman's Village, depending on the traffic.

There are four pods facing the sea and those pods are really popular for group photos and selfies, especially the last pod which has no obstruction. This bar isn't just for people who wants to get drunk by sunset, it isn't all about partying, they also serve afternoon tea from 1pm till 6pm.

At W London, music starts to play out loud somewhere late evening, turning the hotel/lobby into a party place, same goes to W Seoul. It looks like it is their trademark to play dance music so the place becomes much livelier.

I like W's contemporary design - whether it's their room, bar or common area, they all look very modern and hipster but more on the high-end side where it looks really classy.

View from the edge of the bar - it looks like a private pool for residents. If you're looking for a quiet getaway, W Samui is definitely the place to be. You don't even need to leave the place, you get everything in the hotel itself.

View from everybody's favourite selfie spot.

Loi Krathong (THB480++)

I saw this on the menu and it was a spot on. It was simply beautiful and also the reason I chose this. I'm sure this happens to most ladies as pretty things are always appealing! Fresh flowers, rather mild cocktail which is suitable for those of you who wants something light.

Thai Dragon (THB380++)

Pam introduced this cocktail which is one of the more popular ones. I prefer this over Loi Krathong as I normally don't like ice in my cocktails unless it's whiskey ice. This cocktail is very little in terms of ml but it is actually quite potent. You can finish it in 4-5 sips but every sip gets to your head! Will not recommend if you are a light drinker. Some chocolate lining with nuts on top of the glass is very addictive and goes so well with the drink! P/S: You've got to suck your drink from the bird's ass! Perhaps not the best idea for a man to be sipping it :P

Black is the New Pink (THB360++)

This drink is literally pink from beetroot's natural colouring. It comes with a hint of tequilla, which was supposed to be a hint but boy this was strong! A little fruity and sourish on top of tequilla; I'm sure tequilla lovers will enjoy it. This was alright for me, I guess the tequilla wasn't my cup of tea.

We were moved from the pod to the sheltered area when it started to drizzle. It was so unfortunate for us as there was no great sunset view for the night. It was all cloudy that evening and we were "compensated" for the natural phenomenon. We were offered two glasses of cocktails which was so nice of them to do so, as they actually do not have the control over nature and yet they made a move to compensate us. This is the difference between quality bars, they put the extra effort to keep their customers happy.

Thank you Pam for arranging the pod for us and an introduction to the hotel & island too!

Likes: Very picturesque bar, strong cocktails which I would say it is totally worth our money, very friendly staffs
Dislikes: Viewing sunset from this bar is like a gamble; either you get it or you don't (though it's really not up to W's call to decide)

We wanted to visit Mad by Sucre, but ended up here because of Mad by Sucre's 1 drink 1 cake policy was ridiculous. Business owners are entitled to set whatever rules they want - but such rule of forcing their consumers to purchase will drive people away. Epiphyte on the other hand, may not be as popular but at least they welcomed us without any silly rule.

Terrarium ($13++)

Very beautiful dessert but it tasted quite oddly strange, which I can't really compare this to anything else. The cake is very spongy and absorbed the artificial green colouring which I did not enjoy. I'll say it's just pretty to take photos but taste is not my cup of tea.

Galaxy Cake ($10++)

Beautiful and shiny cake - mostly cream inside. Light and fluffy which is great for tea. It's beautiful and totally reminds me of Space, but it is not something I'll order the second time.

Since it was already late afternoon on a Sunday, the staff (or was it owner?) offered us a free cheesecake, on top of our existing order. It was really nice of him.

Which turns out to be my favourite of all!!! This fluffy white pillow looking cheesecake is infused with WHISKY! It was totally a spot on - whisky was surprisingly super strong, and yet still able to taste the fluffy cheesecake! The cake itself is not very sweet which was perfect for us - even those who dislikes dessert, actually enjoyed it!

Whisky Jewel ($8++)

They also serve savoury food too, but we did not try as we came right after lunch. Check out their popular pink risotto rice if you have a chance... the pink is from beetroot and not articial colouring!

Likes: Cute and reasonably priced cakes. Cheesecake is a must! Staffs are very friendly too!
Dislikes: Nothing at the moment

Out of the States, you can only find this in UK & Japan. I woke up super early for this, as I was not keen to queue for it...

Expect to see other pastries along the way too..

Their pastries are so pretty, I wish I had room for everything!

As I visited the cafe in London, I picked the Paris-London.

Frozen S'mores (£7.20)

This has got to be my favourite for the day!!! Torched, soft and fluffy marshmellow wrapped around Tahitian vanilla ice cream that's still frozen inside... Every bite is super heavenly!

Cronut of the Month : Mandarin Jam with Valhorna Tivara & Milk Chocolate Ganache (£4)

Did not really like the cronut in London as compared to NYC - was not as flakey... It just had the texture of a donut more like it.

Paris London (£7.50)

Earl grey mousse and lemon curd - no ladies can resist lemon curd! At least the people that I know.

Yes... I had these all by myself, with a takeaway cronut too!

Likes: Very "Instagrammable", picture worthy, beautiful pastries, convenient. Will definitely be back for pastries
Dislikes: Not cheap - a standard pastry would cost you at least £6 each, and even more if you dine in. Cronut is not as perfect as New York's version. Will definitely not order the cronut again
